Ahead of the December 31 deadline, the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) is issuing a final call for Michiganders ages 21 to 24 to apply for Michigan Reconnect, the largest effort in state history designed to help adult learners without a college degree earn a tuition-free degree or skills certificate at their local community or Tribal college.
“With the clock ticking, we’re urging adults between the ages of 21 and 24 to take advantage of Michigan Reconnect before the December 31 deadline,” said Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, director of MiLEAP. “This is a pivotal moment for Michiganders to invest in their future, gain valuable skills and unlock new career prospects. So far, over 30,000 applicants have already been accepted through the temporary expansion and we want even more young adults to take part in this life-changing opportunity.”
Michigan Reconnect, typically available to adults ages 25 and up, was expanded last year to temporarily lower the eligibility age to 21. The scholarship provides students the opportunity to earn a tuition-free associate degree or skills certificate at their local community or Tribal college, regardless of family income. For students attending an out-of-district community college, Michigan Reconnect covers most of tuition costs – up to the in-district rate.
To support students on their educational journey, Michigan Reconnect offers dedicated Navigators who provide personalized guidance throughout the college-going process and beyond. These Reconnect Navigators, including a dedicated team for those ages 21 to 24, assist students with applying for federal student aid, setting career goals, selecting programs of study, registering for classes and creating graduation plans.
The Michigan Reconnect Navigator team hosts online drop-in office hours every Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. to offer one-on-one support. During these sessions, students can ask questions about the program and receive help with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Reconnect is changing lives for Michigan adults of all ages.
“When I first heard about Michigan Reconnect, I thought it was too good to be true," said Valerie Gilbert, student at Macomb Community College. "Going to college has always been a big goal of mine but I had to delay going back. Now, thanks to Michigan Reconnect, I'm on campus, participating in clubs and pursuing the career I thought it would take me longer to get to. For anyone considering going back to school, put yourself out there and apply – don't let fear hold you back like I almost did. I'm incredibly grateful to Michigan Reconnect for helping me achieve my goal.”
"I have been able to go back to college at the age of 32 all because of Michigan Reconnect,” said Jeremy Horton, student at Grand Rapids Community College. “Applying was fast and simple, and receiving aid took no time at all. I would highly encourage any Michigander who has not done so to look into Michigan Reconnect. I just completed my first semester, and it has been the most fun and fulfilling thing I have done in a long time. Michigan Reconnect is a wonderful program that has allowed me to pursue my dream of graduating college."
Future students who are 21-24 and not already enrolled in college must complete these steps to take advantage of this limited-time opportunity:
Students who are already enrolled in classes at a community college should also apply for the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship at Michigan.gov/Reconnect by Dec. 31, 2024. They should then contact their college’s Financial Aid Office for additional information on applying the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship to their tuition bill and completing a FAFSA form.
Michiganders ages 25 and older will continue to be eligible for Michigan Reconnect after the December 31 deadline. Learn more about earning a degree or certificate tuition-free through Michigan Reconnect at Michigan.gov/Reconnect.
